The Porch Light Story
When I was a young child, I lived 4 houses down from my grandmother’s house. Whenever things at home became stressful, I would pack a bag and call my grandma to tell her I was on my way. My parents watched as I walked out the front door towards the porch light she had turned on. My father would wait to see her turn off the light as a signal that I had arrived.
My grandmother would feed, comfort, and talk to me about what I was experiencing. I could cry, rest, or simply be. She showed me what it is to experience nurturing and care in the face of difficult and painful circumstances.
A porch light can represent many things. It is a light in the darkness. It symbolizes coming home to ourselves or to loved ones. For me, however, it was the light that illuminated my way to a safe place where someone showed me what was needed to heal.
It is in the spirit of that experience that I named this practice Porch Light, and it is in the spirit of my grandmother’s care that I look forward to working with you.
